Urban Ribbon_Detroit Infra-loops

UR-front COMBINE 2

PROGRAM : URBAN PLAN + RIVERFRONT REDEVELOPMENT
LOCATION : DETROIT, MICHIGAN, USA
SIZE : 57,000 ㎡ (Hart Plaza Area)
YEAR : 2012

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Urban Ribbon aims to create Infra-loops  as a new kind of infrastructure which is more flexible for the future possibility.  Infra-Loops is adaptive and  responsive to existing urban conditions. It selectively amplifies existing urban structures rather than destroying it by integrating  infrastructure, landscape and architecture.  It enhances connectivity and constructs diverse experience as well as reinforces ecosystem. Urban Ribbon negotiates boundaries between private and public,  as well as land and water without destroying existing structures. It focuses on blurring physical boundaries while contemplating multiple layers of the city and linking various systems in the city. Urban Ribbon should perform as an interface or gateways, as well as a mediator between different territories. It flows across territories within the ecosystem and multiplies it at the same time.

DESIGN ELEMENTS_three purposes
Enhancing Connectivity
Urban Ribbon improves walkability by connecting the elevated promenade to abandoned spots,  vast rooftops.  The new movement infrastructure networks isolated spots and revitalizes abandoned areas in the city. Car/bike sharing programs and a ferry terminal are placed within the movement infrastructure and it links to public transportation system such as People Mover and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.
Constructing Diverse Experience
Urban Ribbon provides various experience by extending people’s movement from the ground to the sky, from the city center  to the riverfront and vice versa.  With spiral movement, Urban Ribbon amplifies experience of existing sculptures,  theaters and overall  landscape circle patterns in Hart Plaza. New public programs such as performing art center, floating theaters plug in the wandering promenade.
Reinforcing Ecosystem
Urban Ribbon functions as a soft-infrastructure and become a part of ecosystem. Following the wandering infrastructure, vast rooftops and gray areas change into green parks or urban farms.  Moreover, Urban Ribbon creates an eco-sensitive shoreline which can support wildlife habitats and control water quality with artificial wetlands and water gardens.

What if Detroit has a different kind of infrastructure which can reinforce ecology of the city?
