PROGRAM : PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE + CAFE + BICYCLE STORAGE
LOCATION : AMSTERDAM, NETHERLAND
SIZE : 800 ㎡
YEAR : 2012
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Generally, bridge connects more than two separated parts with shortest length. The conventional purpose of a bridge is providing passage with minimum area of its surface. However, located in the center of city Amsterdam surrounded by historical buildings and in front of the Hermitage Amsterdam Museum, the intention of the “de-tour bridge” is to provide longer journey from two different points. Since the canal in Amsterdam is a wide-spread urban fabric all over the city, crossing river is not just crossing ‘water’, which disconnects urban continuity in many cities, but extending the experience of the city.
The strategy of the proposed bridge is to create longer pathway, so it goes up to quite high level allowing people elevated perspective over the canal, and while going down through the spiral ramp they can experience panoramic view as well. The bridge also gives another option to cross the canal, which is shortcut pathway with gentle slope for cyclists, wheelchair, and people who want to cross the canal in a different way.
