An Empty Valley_ city main library Gwangju

An empty core implied sense of place

The 11.6m-deep waste reservoir pit with rough materiality is the symbolic and uncanny space that implies the story and sense of place in Sang-mu incineration plant. The empty space connecting phase 1 and 2 is a symbolic space where the place for conflict and controversies turns into the place for reconciliation and participation. The possibility and expandability of the place is condensed in the empty core.

Internal amplification of the empty core
The empty core implies the sense of place and is extended to the new center of the library. It mediates the different programs and inside-outside space while securing the independence of each programs. The materiality and characteristics of the existing space in the plant is converted into the sacred Space of Knowledge in the new library.

External amplification of the empty core: urban extension
The potentiality of the empty core is extended East-west and South-north side of the city. The empty core is extended and connected to Sang-mu Sports Park and cultural complex along South-North axis. The empty core is stretched along west-east axis by being combined with phased development in the next stage, resulted in providing a new urban scape in Gwangju.
